Despite the pandemic throwing a spanner in the works of the art world, you’ve seen how it has incredibly adapted and evolved in light of the new changes. BMW, for one, is branching out to art, and that’s not even the cherry on top. The new Ultimate AI Masterpiece virtual installation features wholly new artwork generated by artificial intelligence on the canvas BMW knows best: cars.
The eight “masterpieces,” decked out on vinyl wraps covering BMW’s 8 Series models, were created with the help of NVIDIA’s open-source StyleGAN software. The AI was fed with 50,000 images spanning 900 years of art history, along with a curated collection of 50 creations from BMW’s artist collaborators from over the past half-century, to learn what constituted art.
It then generated brand-new art that combined its comprehension of both classic and contemporary styles.
The art cars were designed in collaboration with advertising agency Goodby Silverstein & Partners creative technologist Nathan Shipley and contemporary art community founder artdrunk Gary Yeh.
Launched in conjunction with Frieze New York 2021, the art installation will be shown at the art fair.
