Just days after his debut on Saturday Night Live, Tesla founder Elon Musk has announced that a brand-new SpaceX mission will be funded by Dogecoin.
Aptly named the DOGE-1, the satellite will set off on its mission to the Moon sometime next year. And in true Musk fashion, it will be the first cryptocurrency and “meme” in space.
“This mission will demonstrate the application of cryptocurrency beyond Earth’s orbit and set the foundation for interplanetary commerce,” said SpaceX Vice-President of Commercial Sales Tom Ochinero.
“We’re excited to launch DOGE-1 to the Moon!”
According to SpaceX, this transaction proves DOGE is a fast, reliable, and secure digital currency that is sophisticated enough to finance a commercial Moon mission, and will set a precedent for future missions outside of the Earth’s orbit.
SpaceX will be collaborating with the Geometric Space Corporation (GMC) mission management to launch a 40kg (88lbs) cubesat as a rideshare on a Falcon 9 lunar payload mission in Q1 2022.
“Having officially transacted with DOGE for a deal of this magnitude, Geometric Energy Corporation, and SpaceX have solidified DOGE as a unit of account for lunar business in the space sector,” said Geometric Energy’s CEO Samuel Reid.
We’ll just have to wait and see how many other cryptocurrencies and ‘memes’ head to the Moon in the coming years. Take a listen to the Doge song below.
