This week, Snap unveiled its next-gen Spectacles, the firm’s first pair of glasses that promises to bring augmented reality (AR) to life.
The lightweight display glasses (0.29 lbs) will be fully integrated with Snap’s Lens Studio, a desktop application that allows creators to build AR experiences, or ‘Lenses’, that can be used on Snapchat.
By donning the new eyewear, creators will be able to overlay their Lenses on to the world, exploring new ways to experiment with immersive AR.
The Spectacles will feature dual 3D waveguide displays, with a 23.6 degree field of view overlay Lenses. It’s powered by the firm’s new Snap Spatial Engine, which leverages six degrees of freedom and hand, marker and surface tracking, allowing creators to realistically overlay their AR creations.
It also comes up 2 RGB cameras, 4 built-in microphones, and 2 stereo speakers for a multi-sensorial experience. Creators will be able to wear the glasses for an estimated 30 minutes per charge.
Snap also indicated that creators can, via Spectacles, wirelessly push the Lenses for real-time rapid testing & iterations.
Unfortunately, the Spectacles won’t be for sale to the general public—at least for now. They’ll only be distributed to AR creators to use in conjunction with the Lens Studio.
