One of the most viewed videos in internet history, Charlie Bit My Finger, is scheduled to be deleted from YouTube after its non-fungible token (NFT) version was auctioned off for a staggering US$760,999.
While the 55-second-long clip was slated to be taken down on May 23, the original is still currently up on YouTube as an unlisted video.
However, other users have been re-uploading the famed clip, not wanting a piece of internet meme history to disappear. Some have also lamented how NFTs have possibly tarnished the emotional value of content.
“The original was taken down but I won’t let it disappear,” wrote one of the users, as reported by LADbible.
One YouTube user explained, “The whole NFT business is shady as hell and I do not agree with it; I’m sure many people will and already have done this, but it’s [for] preserving a YouTube relic, I’m here for it.” Another shared, “Because I do not support NFTs, this video will be here to spite the people who actually do this stuff.”
Though it’s nearly impossible to completely remove the video from the internet, the winning bidder of the NFT will be awarded a certificate of authenticity to the original clip.
As for the incredible price of the sale, as per CNN, a bidding war in the auction’s final hours sent its price skyrocketing, with user 3fmusic ultimately securing the NFT.
The buyer will also have a chance to recreate a parody of the video with Harry and Charlie, who are now 17 and 15 respectively.
