France’s famed Centre Pompidou museum, located in Paris, will be shutting its door to the public in late 2023 for a three-year renovation project.
At the same time, however, it’s set to open its doors at its first North American location, and in an unexpected place: Jersey City, New Jersey.
“We are proud to welcome the Centre Pompidou to New Jersey and we look forward to the opening of what is destined to become one of the premier cultural attractions in North America,” said New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy.
The Centre Pompidou’s other locations include Malaga, Brussels, and Shanghai, cities with a distinctive art culture unlike what most may think of when it comes to Jersey City.
Surprisingly, according to Travel + Leisure, the state’s second-largest city has been climbing up the ranks in the arts scene, with standout displays in recent years such as 2016’s Marilyn Monroe exhibition.
Jersey City’s Centre Pompidou is set to open in early 2024, and will be aptly named Centre Pompidou x Jersey City. The museum will feature similar pieces to its Paris headquarters, including 20th- and 21st-century art from Pompidou’s extensive 120,000-piece collection.
The new museum will reside in the Pathside Building in Journal Square, which is a short train ride from the World Trade Center in Manhattan and Penn Station in Newark.
In the coming months, OMA, an architecture firm, will be working with Jersey City on the design of Centre Pompidou within its historic premises.
While the 58,000-square-foot building was originally set to become an apartment block, the city purchased it in 2018 to turn it into an arts destination – and it is now set to become a key one in the city’s landscape.
