The world’s oldest auction house has furthered its stake in the digital world with the opening of a virtual gallery.
Taking up a prime spot in Decentraland – a decentralized virtual reality platform powered by blockchain – the gallery is a virtual replica of its famed galleries in London.
Similar to what you’d see at its real-life galleries at New Bond Street, the digital version features all five ground-level gallery spaces, including Sotheby’s London Commissionaire, Hans Lomulder, at the door to greet you.
Sotheby’s curated NFT auction, Natively Digital, will be live-streamed into the virtual gallery. The sale will feature the first non-fungible token (NFT) ever created, Quantum, by new media artist Kevin McCoy.
Another highlight of the exhibition is an artwork by Robert Alice, featuring an intelligent NFT that learns as it’s spoken to. The artist will showcase live sessions to demonstrate its learning capabilities, which will be broadcast in Decentraland.
“We see spaces like Decentraland as the next frontier for digital art where artists, collectors, and viewers alike can engage with one another from anywhere in the world and showcase art that is fundamentally scarce and unique, but accessible to anyone for viewing,” said Michael Bouhanna, Specialist and Head of Sales at Sotheby’s.
