When talking about the Pride Flag, most people would be familiar with the original rainbow flag that was created in 1978.
However, a little-known tidbit is that Gilbert Baker, one of the key proponents behind the flag, had intended for it to evolve over the years to include more of the LGBTQ+ community.
In the last decade, the Pride Flag has certainly evolved to include more identities that deserve recognition and celebration. A few years ago, Amber Hikes introduced an updated Pride Flag with black and brown stripes, paying homage to people of color in the community.
The following year, the Transgender Flag was integrated by designer Daniel Quasar into the Pride Flag, with the former’s baby blue, pink, and white stripes added onto the modified rainbow colors.
Now, another designer, Valentino Vecchietti, has updated the flag to include and acknowledge intersex persons.
Together with Intersex Equality Rights UK, Vecchietti designed the new flag to incorporate the Intersex Flag introduced in 2013 – yellow with a purple circle in the center.
As the LGBTQ+ community continues to grow, you can certainly expect to see further evolutions of the Pride Flag—just as the founders had intended. Take a look at the updated flag below.
