When it opens in 2023, IKEA’s new store in Copenhagen, Denmark will be unlike any other IKEA you know. It will be located right in the lively heart of the city, add a pop of green to the signature blue and yellow—and, oh, have a public park on its rooftop.
Poised to stick out like a green thumb, the warehouse aims to connect city-dwellers of the “extremely busy” Meatpacking district to nature, while giving them a space to rest their tired feet. Getting there will be easy too—a feature that IKEA locations notoriously lack—and visitors can reach the store by foot, bike, or any other sustainable mode of transport, in honor of Copenhagen’s vision to be the world’s first carbon-neutral capital by 2025.
Danish architecture firm Dorte Mandrup was tasked to design the 74,000-square-meter (nearly 800,000-square-foot) space, envisioning it with hundreds of trees, “wild urban nature,” and a rooftop park 66 above swarming traffic.
As an ode to its eco spirit, the store’s white façade will be draped in a “curtain” of greenery consisting of about 50 trees and bushes. Slithers between the green will not only allow natural light to elegantly seep in but also offer a peek at the product displays within.
The connecting plaza will include a café, as well as hundreds of parking spaces for bicycles, and bridge customers to a new bus terminal.
The store’s electricity will be generated through 1,450 square meters (15,600 square feet) of solar panels, while water from nearby canals will be recycled to cool down the outlet.
The unique IKEA store is expected to open in the summer of 2023.
