A foldable Google Pixel phone could be arriving around the bend, if a codename in the Android 12 Beta is of any indication.
As quoted by Yanko Design, developers who examined the Android 12 Beta code in the past months uncovered a reference to model numbers for the Pixel 6 lineup, including a mention of a ‘Passport’ foldable device.
Tech YouTuber Waqar Khan then visualized a passport-shaped Pixel smartphone in a set of renders, complete with the Pixel’s trademark hole-punch camera. As for the foldable design, he envisions it working in a similar layout as the Samsung Galaxy Fold. Given the tech industry’s fixation on flexible displays, though, you can expect that the rumored foldable Pixel phone will be a step up from the Galaxy Fold’s crease-plagued design.
“Project Passport” being cited in Android 12 Beta suggests that Google is building a standalone Android OS for a flexible Pixel, Yanko Design notes.
Adding fuel to the fire was a tweet by tech leaker Jon Prosser in February about a “Google Pixel ‘Fold’ [being] a real thing.” Tech analyst Ross Young made an even earlier claim, far back in December 2020, that a whole bevy of foldable phones by Samsung, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Google would be expected to arrive in the second half of the year.
Meanwhile, it is confirmed that Pixel 6 will be unveiled at the upcoming Made by Google event, which usually takes place in October. Whether or not the foldable Pixel will make its appearance remains unclear.
