Sony has been actively repackaging its box designs of late. Not only has it unveiled 100% paper packaging with minimal ink and color, but it has also now come up with a solution to ship odd-shaped products without adding damage to the climate.
Unlike television displays and laptops, Sony Electronics’ Sound Bar products—which come with a long bar speaker and a box-like subwoofer—cannot be fitted into regular boxes and safely transported without being upsized. Half of the space in those boxes would also be filled with either air or packaging materials to soften impact during delivery.
Sony also notes the potential carbon costs associated with the audio system’s extensive shipping journey, which involves a 25-mile trip from Sony’s factory in Malaysia to the port via a truck, 9,000 miles of distance to the US by ship, and thousands of miles of travel on the road before reaching consumers’ doorsteps.
This means that, if Sony doesn’t reinvent, the Sound Bar line’s boxes alone would waste a considerable amount of space and use up unnecessary materials, and this will have a noticeable impact on its environmental footprint.
Its remedy? A Tetris-like box design that allows the company to pack more into a smaller space. With these L-shaped “puzzle pieces,” Sony can fit 600 boxes into a pallet at 12.34kg (27.21lbs) of CO2 per box, whereas it would only be able to stack 380 standard boxes in a pallet at 14.46kg (31.9lbs) of CO2 per pack.
The modern Sound Bar units are also friendlier on the environment, and are constructed with more recycled plastic without affecting sound quality. According to the electronics brand, development of the new material involved “many trials” with acoustic engineers to deliver characteristics “comparable to virgin plastic.”
