At this new high-tech café in Tokyo, baristas don’t need arms and waiters don’t have to be able to walk. That’s because Dawn Avatar Robot Café is staffed with disabled people who work with humanoid robots for mobility.
The café, owned by Japanese robotics firm Ory Laboratory, aims to create more job opportunities for disabled persons, “even if [they] are bedridden.” The company was inspired to open the establishment as its own CEO Kentaro Yoshifuji was bedridden in hospital for about three years and saw the need to help carve an accessible future.
It is also optimized for the era of remote work, as the ‘OriHime-D’ robots can be controlled from afar through the internet. Human workers can also communicate with customers via the cameras, microphones, and speakers built into the bots.
Employees can maneuver the robots simply through eye movement, so even people with extreme mobility issues can work at the café.
In the same vein, Hyundai acquired Boston Dynamics this week with the vision of humans and robots in coexistence. With this wholesome café concept, it seems the future couldn’t come sooner enough.
