Mention Elon Musk to anyone, and they’ll certainly have some unique thoughts about the Tesla, SpaceX, and Neuralink head who also happens to be a centibillionaire, a father to seven children, and holds influence over the cryptocurrency market.
With a life this animated, investment site Public.com wanted to honor Musk for his 50th birthday on Monday, June 28 by commissioning statues in his likeness, cast in bronze. 100 14-inch figures were given away, while a 150-pound, life-sized version was installed in Lower Manhattan to match the size of Musk’s “ambition (and maybe ego).”
The statues were sculpted to reflect Musk’s iconic reaction to the first Falcon Heavy launch, a historic moment captured by National Geographic to be cherished forevermore by the meme-loving internet.
“Elon Musk is ubiquitous in pop culture and is CEO of one of the most popular companies on Public,” the company explains on its website. “Maybe you love him. Maybe you think he should tweet less. Either way, to commemorate his 50th birthday, we gave away one hundred 14-inch bronze statues of the man.”
Unfortunately, just like the ball that smashed the Cybertruck’s “bulletproof” window, internet users thought the statues looked a wreck—in that it didn’t resemble Musk. Fans have likened them to the iffy Cristiano Ronaldo bust at Madeira Airport.
For those considering building an Elon Musk altar to attract fortune in the cryptocurrency world, Public.com has moved the life-sized sculpture to eBay to auction it off, with 100% of proceeds dedicated to First Generation Investors, a nonprofit that teaches investing to underserved high school students. The bronze figure is “just 150 pounds of metal and not investment advice,” the company teased on Twitter.
Although simply constructed from resin, before being finished in a bronze coating, the six-foot-tall statue has raked in US$2,550 as of the time of publication.
Appearance-wise, give Musk another 30 years, and we’ll see if they look the same.
And because Elon’s ambition (and maybe ego) is definitely not miniature, we dropped a life-sized statue on 14th St. and The High Line stairs in NYC.
