Moschino pulls the curtain on how differently you can spin fashion shows by creating an actual mini-musical to showcase its Resort 2022 fashion collection.
Celebrating old Hollywood glam, Moschino’s forthcoming selection envisaged by lead designer Jeremy Scott takes a bite out of the 1950s, including the era’s preoccupation with diner food. Highlights include couture hotdog, hamburger, and ice cream pieces, as well as vibrant dresses, varsity jackets, and cardigans of Americana charm.
The star of the show is Karen Elson, who is not only a supermodel but also a singer-songwriter. Her relationship with music makes her the perfect fit for the quirky Lightning Strikes: The Moschino Musical, which she leads, sings, and writes for.
A day at the diner turns into an In The Heights moment as the jukebox gets to work, prompting everyone in the diner to dance. The 42-year-old songstress, who plays a waitress, has a fever dream consisting of wild outfits you wouldn’t have thought existed, from a hotdog suit to a melted ice cream dress with a conical bust area and the hamburger outfit made famous by Katy Perry.
Outside, models clad in colorful pinstripe suits and fedoras dance to Funkytown, Singing in the Rain-style.
While the unique direction might take some viewers by surprise, Scott says it’s not too far off from planning the usual fashion shows. “Even when I’m doing a runway, I always think about my shows as films,” he told Elle magazine. “The woman is a character, and where would that character go? What would she do and what would she never do? And maybe there’s no dialogue. But fashion is a language, and it speaks to so many people!”
