SpaceX founder Elon Musk recently announced a new partnership with Canadian engineering firm Geometric Energy Corporation (GEC), with plans to bring “Space Art” to the Moon. Now, the space venture has confirmed a new plan to make advertising in space a reality, too.
As part of GEC’s Rideshare Program, a CubeSat displaying advertisements will be released from a SpaceX Falcon 9 Rocket while in space. According to HYPEBEAST, the advertising costs will be determined by cryptocurrency tokens, which can be used to control pixels on the CubeSat, allowing different organizations to vie for advertising space.
The first CubeSat billboard is scheduled to launch in 2022, as GEC is still developing the quantum communication system that would allow near-instantaneous information transfer over large distances, such as from Earth to space.
Will one of the major corporations be on the first space billboard? Or will it be an unlikely candidate? With many people lamenting the over-saturation of advertising in our daily lives on Earth, it remains to be seen if the wider public will be partial to advertisements live-streamed from space instead.
