The Tokyo 2020 Olympics have barely started, but they’ve already been hit with wave after wave of bad news. Not only have COVID-19 cases spiked in Japan, the Olympic Village itself has also seen athletes recently test positive for the virus.
Now, one of the country’s most-known companies, Toyota Motors, has pulled out from airing any Tokyo Olympics commercials, as per Deadline.
According to polls, a majority of the Japanese public are against the Games happening, with the IOC drawing tons of ire from pushing on with it despite the pandemic. Hence, to align itself with Japanese citizens, Toyota has not only withdrawn their commercials, but will also not be sending representatives to the opening ceremony either.
According to the daily Yomiuri, a senior executive at the firm said the Olympics are “becoming an event that has not gained the public’s understanding.”
