A 3D wave went viral online when it first appeared on a billboard in Gangnam, South Korea. Similar billboards have since been sighted, like the new giant 3D resident feline in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Now, a whale and a waterfall made by the same artists as the original wave come crashing ashore in Times Square, New York City.
Media art unit a’strict debuted its project WAVE in Gangnam in May last year. The immersive installation created the illusion of a giant wave thrashing around in a deep box, when it all really was just the flat LED screen about the Coex Artium.
Now, the group’s new creations have landed in New York City, taking the form of Whale #2 and Waterfall-NYC, a giant whale and a waterfall.
Whale #2 is located at Pedestrian Plaza, where the 30,000-square-foot screen by advertising firm Silvercast Media will be transformed into a tank containing the marine creature. And Waterfall-NYC occupies the exterior of One Times Square, boasting a height of just over 336 feet across four screens. This is about three times taller than a previous similar exhibition by Olafur Eliasson in 2008, The New York City Waterfalls.
Nestled among the cityscape and skyscrapers in one of the busiest areas of the world, a mirage of nature is delivered via technology. A highly strange juxtaposition to process, but musings can be done onsite of the installations from July 16 to 27.
