If you have an old iPhone lying around in your drawer, you might want to dust it off, plug it in, and use it as a secondary camera.
What for, you ask? Well, as spotted by iMore, a photo taken with 2013’s iPhone 5s was one of the winning shots for the 2021 iPhone Photography Awards (IPPAWARDS). Diego Moreno’s The Watchman nabbed the third prize for the competition’s Children category.
The latest iPhone 12 series is Apple’s first and only lineup to support Night Mode across all lenses, but Moreno’s surreal, high-contrast snap of a child seeing in the darkness with an eye in his mouth proves you don’t need the latest smartphone to brilliantly capture light and shadows. In fact, an eight-year-old phone could do the trick.
Surprisingly, the photo isn’t an outlier. According to the IPPAWARDS, out of the 54 winners, only seven were captured using the iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro Max.
If you’re already using an instant camera for your Instagram shots, how about having a go with one of your abandoned iPhones?
