Samsung announced its latest generation of wearable processors—the Exynos W920—on Monday, ahead of the highly-anticipated Unpacked event. It’s expected to be the powerhouse of the upcoming Galaxy Watch 4 series, and boasts the title of the industry’s first-ever five-nanometer processor.
Currently, the best Wear OS chip is the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 4100+, and that’s 12nm, as noted by 9to5Google. So this compact new processor, as you can imagine, already has a foot forward in quite a few leaps and bounds.
The Exynos W920 is built with two Arm Cortex-A55 cores for high-performing yet power-efficient processing, and an Arm Mali-G68 GPU. This will provide an improved CPU performance, which Samsung states has around 10 times better graphics performance than its predecessor, the Exynos W9110.

Faster application launches, an LTE modem, and an eye-catching 3D graphical user interface (GUI) are also coming to the devices utilizing this bite-sized tech feat. Its small size will also allow smartwatches to incorporate bigger batteries alongside it, or allow for sleeker overall silhouettes.
Wearables benefit largely from always-on-display (AOD) tech, which allows users to view the time, date, and their notifications, alongside other widgets, without needing to wake the watch or unlock it, the company explains.
However, this can be pretty costly in terms of power consumption. The Exynos W920 therefore aims to reduce this pain point by activating a dedicated low-power display processor, the Cortex-M55, which reduces the amount of power required for display in AOD mode.
“With the Exynos W920, future wearables will be able to run applications with visually appealing user interfaces and more responsive user experiences while keeping you connected on the go with fast LTE,” Harry Cho, vice president of System LSI marketing at Samsung, asserts in the press release.
