Shoppers in IKEA’s hometown of Sweden won’t just be able to purchase appliances, furniture, or food from the retail giant, but they will also soon be able to buy clean energy, too.
Come September, IKEA will be introducing STRÖMMA, an “electricity subscription” that it said is both good for the planet and customers’ wallets.
“Through the STRÖMMA offer in Sweden, customers can buy affordable, certified electricity from solar and wind, and use an app to track their own electricity usage. Customers who have already bought solar panels from IKEA can also track their own production in the app and sell back the electricity they don’t use themselves,” the brand said.
According to Reuters, Svea Solar, a partner of IKEA’s parent company Ingka, will buy the electricity on the Nordic power exchange Nord Pool, before reselling it without surcharge to consumers. Subscribers likely will pay a fixed monthly fee plus a variable rate, as reported by Electrek.
With the brand rolling out more sustainable and eco-conscious offerings in the last several years, this seems like an incredible step forward in the sustainability.
Bojan Stupar, sales manager at IKEA Sweden, agreed, and said: “Today we offer smart and energy-efficient products and services that contribute to prolonging the life of products, reducing waste, saving water, and eating more healthily, as well as reducing electricity usage.”
“Providing solar and wind power at a low price to more people feels like the natural next step in our sustainability journey.”
Eventually, IKEA hopes to roll out the subscription to all of its global markets, with plans to source energy from wind and solar farms that are less than five years old, in order to encourage more to be built.
