Tokyo Game Show 2021 To Open Event In VR So You Can Attend Sans Trip To Japan

Tokyo Game Show is one of the current biggest annual gaming events among others such as E3. But this year marks a first for the show as it offers fans the option to experience the event in its entirety—almost—without actually being there.
Like last year, the event will take place online due to COVID-19 restrictions. Usually, this would mean a live-streamed event on the official website as well as official programs being available to view on YouTube, Twitter, Nico Nico, Twitch and Facebook.
However, this year, the show is taking the now-normal livestreamed experience to the next level: it has its own virtual reality (VR) version which can be “attended” on select headsets.
Instead of forgoing the usual in-person event experience for a rather underwhelming livestream watched on a mobile phone, patrons will be able to “visit booths as if [they] were wandering around inside the gaming world.”
Although the website states that there will be an offline venue, that’s limited to press and media.
It’s been said that the VR version of the show is a “grand experiment” for its organizers, and that they are “taking on the challenge of building the game show of [the] future.”
Organizers have recently revealed the schedule for the four-day event, which includes an Xbox panel reportedly being the time and place for a big announcement from the company. Other companies making an appearance see popular names such as Konami, Bandai Namco, Ubisoft, and miHoYo.
Tokyo Game Show VR 2021 will be available to experience from September 30 to October 3, and will support the Oculus 1 and 2, the Oculus Rift, and the HTC Vive. This can also be steamed natively through the Oculus Quest headset alongside PC.
