TIME magazine’s annual list of the world’s most influential people has been released, with various titans of tech among those honored by the magazine. The 2021 list includes Apple’s Tim Cook, Tesla’s Elon Musk, Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, and Ethereal co-founder Vitalik Buterin.
According to CNET, Nike co-founder Phil Knight authored Cook’s profile, saying the visionary had “character, compassion, and courage.” He also noted the CEO’s achievements, as under his leadership, “Apple stock has gone up 1,000%, making it the most valuable company in the world.”
As for Tesla and SpaceX founder Musk, Ariana Huffington of the Huffington Post empire said the maestro was “augmenting human possibilities.”
“And by doing it all with his relentlessly optimistic, space-half-full showmanship, he’s offering a model for how we can solve the big, existential challenges in front of us,” she added.
Nvidia CEO Huang, who has become a key figure in artificial intelligence (AI), received praise from DeepLearning.ai founder Andrew Ng, who said he deserved credit for advancing AI, especially by adapting graphic processing units for more general tasks.
“In the process, he has helped enable a revolution that allows phones to answer questions out loud, farms to spray weeds but not crops, doctors to predict the properties of new drugs—with more wonders to come,” wrote Ng.
It’s also no surprise Ethereum co-founder Buterin made the list, considering how mainstream cryptocurrency has become in the last year. Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian said the alt-coin pioneer allowed him to be more excited about the future of the Internet.
“From there, a new world has opened up, and given rise to new ways of leveraging blockchain technology—some of which I’ve invested in. Whether it’s startups like Sorare reinventing fantasy sports or Rainbow users showing off their NFT collections, none of this would’ve existed without Vitalik’s creation.”
Other innovators who made the list include Katalin Kariko, the inventor of mRNA vaccines, virologist Barney Graham, and Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. Head over here to view the full 2021 list.
