Tesla Reveals Proprietary Tesla Glass Is Secret Behind Signature ‘Quiet Cabins’

They say “a magician never reveals his secrets,” but Tesla has done just a little bit of that in its latest video, offering viewers a peek into the company’s design studio.
Tesla Glass is the star of the show here. Material specialist Mike Pilliod, who was also a former Apple material engineer, explains how the company achieves its signature “quiet cabin” across all its products, including vehicles and solar panels, in this video.
First launched in 2016, the glass is double-paned and comes with a dampening acoustic layer sandwiched in between them. This is referred to as the “acoustic side laminated drops,” which Pilliod states are integrated into every Tesla vehicle.
Apart from drowning out road noise, the glass also provides UV ray protection and still remain safe even if an accident were to occur. The UV protection is especially crucial in its rooftop paneling, which protects passengers while enabling them to enjoy the “open” feeling from inside the vehicle.
Plus, the front windshield glass requires even more development as it needs to double as a lens for the car’s Autopilot camera.
If Tesla were to incorporate the laser beam windshield wipers, though, this section of glass might need to go back to the drawing board.

In its solar panels, where noise canceling isn’t the most important feature, the glass takes on a solar-centric approach by being made of a thin film with solar properties.

Other layers include one with standard PVB (polyvinyl butyral), which can be customized depending on if solar properties or acoustic properties are required.
