Following the slew of new features that were released on Monday as part of the iOS 15 update, Apple has just made an announcement for another new feature that could be heading our way soon.
This is none other than the ability to store vaccine cards in the Wallet app on iPhone for easy access, making entering venues and events a hassle-free experience—much better than digging through your bag trying to find a small card only to realize you’ve left it at home, or having to scroll through your inbox for an email.
It’s an addition to the new feature introduced Monday, which allows users to store verifiable health records, including vaccine records and test results, in the Health app.
Both of these are verifiable based on the SMART Health Cards specification. The information will then be able to be shared with third-party apps such as airlines and event venues. Users will also need to approve the information being shared, alleviating privacy concerns.
When the feature is available, organizations that issue these SMART Cards will be able to let their users know when their information can be downloaded and stored onto their phones.
Apart from a rather vague “in an upcoming software update,” Apple hasn’t stated a release date or any more information about this new feature. But with the reopening of venues, many of which require proof of vaccination, it’ll surely come in handy.
