While the US Federal Trade Commission continues to lobby for the ‘right to repair’ law, Apple has introduced one of its strictest repair rules following the launch of the iPhone 13 lineup.
It now seems that if a user were to repair a broken screen anywhere other than at the official Apple store or an affiliated provider, the phone’s Face ID feature could be disabled permanently, as per Pocket Lint.
According to an investigation by Phone Repair Guru, even a genuine display screen could render the function obsolete, as seen in a demonstration in which two brand-new iPhone 13 screens are swapped.
An error message is shown to read, “Unable to verify this iPhone has a genuine Apple display.”
However, when the screens were returned to their original devices, Face ID started working again. As MacRumors pointed out, this simple test showed that the smartphone is now able to detect if a fixed screen has been approved by Apple.
With repair costs at official Apple retailers often costing more than those by third-party providers, this new rule isn’t likely to be popular among users. Plus, it wasn’t officially announced by the brand, which has yet to comment on the finding.
If you’ve got your hands on the latest iPhone, be sure to take extra care of your screens.
