Yes, those are inflatable lungs that are almost four stories tall. And yes, they’re floating 100 feet above Canada’s largest cities.
This comes as a collaborative effort between the Canadian Lung Association and marketing agency McCann, the airborne installation hoping to raise awareness of pollution and its effects on respiratory health.
First up was Calgary on September 25 to mark World Lung Day, but the pair of organs has graced Toronto and Halifax too.
At every location, there are representatives from the organization ready to field any questions about lung health, air quality, or the lungs themselves from curious passersby.
There’s also a website created by McCann and Performance Art. This offers up information about air quality in some of the major cities in Canada, and assists the site’s visitors in sending messages to the regional government departments, urging them to take action to improve air quality.

According to the Canadian Lung Association, upwards of 15,000 Canadians die every year due to bad air quality. Terry Dean, CEO, tells Muse by Clio that it is “crucial” to take action “now more than ever.”
“It is our hope that Canadians will be moved to learn more and seek protective measures against the crisis we are facing.”
