Former Apple design chief Jony Ive had stayed private about his close friendship with Steve Jobs since the late co-founder’s passing. Nevertheless, he still thinks of Jobs every day, as detailed in a stirring 10th-anniversary remembrance piece published by the Wall Street Journal.
In his eulogy a decade back, Ive described Jobs as his “closest and… most loyal friend.” It’s only natural that he’d keep the most wonderful memories of his confidant close to his heart.
“I have barely thought about Steve’s death,” he wrote. “My memories of the brutal, heartbreaking day 10 years ago are scattered and random… I don remember a hazy October sky and shoes that were too tight. I remember afterwards Tim [Cook] and I sat quietly in the garden together for a long time,” he continued.
“But I think about Steve every day.”
Ive wrote about his awe with Jobs’ genius and curiosity in great depth. “I loved how he saw the world,” he noted, describing the late Apple chairman’s thought process as “profoundly beautiful.”
“He was without doubt the most inquisitive human I have ever met,” Ive elaborated. “His insatiable curiosity was not limited or distracted by his knowledge or expertise, nor was it casual or passive.”
To Jobs, the yearning to learn “was far more important than wanting to be right.” Ive found a kindred soul in Jobs through this shared personality trait. “Our curiosity united us. It formed the basis of our joyful and productive collaboration. I think it also tempered our fear of doing something terrifyingly new.”
Ive said that he still keeps in close contact with Jobs’ wife, Laurene Powell Jobs, having “endured deaths and celebrated births” with the Jobs family in their 30 years of knowing each other. “We talk all the time, often about Steve but rarely about my work with him,” he expressed.
His friendship with Laurene Jobs now extends into a working relationship with his own design firm, LoveFrom. According to Ive, the studio’s name and founding were also inspired, in part, by Jobs.
“After nearly 30 years, I left Apple, driven by my curiosity to learn and discover new ways to make a useful contribution. It is Steve’s powerful motivation that informed the name of my next adventure, LoveFrom.”
