The first commissioned design project to emerge from former Apple design chief
Sir Jony Ive’s creative studio, LoveFrom, is the beautiful
Terra Carta Seal for HRH Prince Charles, commending private sector companies that have made meaningful commitments in sustainability efforts. The design’s unveiling coincides with the global COP26 climate summit.
45 companies have been awarded with the inaugural, annual seal, including
Amazon, L’Oréal, PepsiCo, Salesforce, AstraZeneca, Siemens Energy, and Bank of America. The recipients hail from around the world, and fill a gamut of sectors like beauty, fashion, retail, and technology,
Forbes reports.
These companies have made noticeable, unique tweaks to their businesses that align with the vision of Prince Charles’ Sustainable Markets Initiative to limit global temperature rises to just 1.5°C (34.7°F) by 2050.

Jony Ive himself spearheaded the design for the
Terra Carta (meaning earth charter) seal, depicting intricate illustrations of flora and fauna to mirror the charter’s wish “to reunite people and planet, by giving fundamental rights and value to Nature.” Reminiscent of the beloved works of William Morris, Josef Frank, Nick Knight, and Christopher Marley, the seal is adorned with features of nature like ladybugs, honey bees, monarch butterflies, birds, fern, magnolia, and oak leaves,

Ive tells Wallpaper* that, rather than serving as superficial embellishments, the natural motifs “gently take control of the image” and “are what gives the design life.”

The Terra Carta motto, “concordiae naturae, hominum et planetae” (for the harmony of nature, people and the planet), encases the circular stamp. Like the wordmark, it’s written in LoveFrom’s own brand typeface, which the studio has reserved for special projects. “We thought we would use this typeface for our friends,” says Ive, whose team spent two years developing the bespoke LoveFrom Serif. “We couldn’t think of a better way to take advantage of a few years of work around the Terra Carta, and I think it works really quite well.”

Ive adds: “You can see the typography is clearly central to the seal, but I was seduced by the gentle, slightly anarchic dominance of the natural references.”
Introducing the seal, Prince Charles says in a
statement: “The Terra Carta Seal recognizes those organizations which have made a serious commitment to a future that is much more sustainable, and puts nature, people and the planet at the heart of the economy. We all need to make changes if we are to preserve the planet for our children and grandchildren and these businesses have pledged to make it easier for us all to do so.”
