Earlier this year, Instagram revealed it was looking into the concept of creator subscriptions, which would allow users to offer ‘Exclusive Stories’ to paid followers.
Now, it appears the plan could soon become a reality, with industry insiders noting that in the US and UK, the platform has added in-app purchase options for ‘Instagram Subscriptions’.
According to TechCrunch, Sensor Tower and Apptopia, programs tracking the app’s ecosystem, showed the new in-app purchase option was described in Instagram’s App Store listing on November 1, with a price tag of US$4.99. Another US$0.99 option was added on November 3.
Other tech insiders, such as UK-based social media consultants Matt Navarra and Brian Kofi Hollingsworth, tweeted about the listings as well, boosting the credibility of the rumors.

Previously, back in August, Alessandro Paluzzi, who reverse-engineers media sites, discovered the app was planning on an ‘Exclusive Stories’ service.
A content creator’s subscribers would receive special “member badges,” as well as gain access to exclusive Stories and live videos. Chances are, this feature could feature in the upcoming ‘Instagram Subscriptions’.
In addition, at app’s Creator Week in June, Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri explained the platform would support three types of monetization tools, of which one included direct payments, such as tips, badges, and “gated content of subscriptions.”
“I love those because those give creators a direct relationship with their fans — which I think is probably more sustainable and predictable over the long run,” Mosseri said.
While Instagram has yet to make an official announcement regarding its subscription plans, it’s unsurprising the site is finding more ways for creators to monetize their following, especially with the competition mounting from other platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, and OnlyFans.
