McDonald’s Tells Tesla It’ll Accept Dogecoin Only If Carmaker Uses ‘Grimacecoin’
By Mikelle Leow, 27 Jan 2022

It’s been such a rough week for cryptocurrency holders, some have joked that they should find a job at McDonald’s. Even Elon Musk might need to downsize his meals—“I will eat a Happy Meal on TV if McDonald’s accepts Bitcoin,” the Tesla CEO tweeted Tuesday.
There is some bias in that quip. The automaker phased out Bitcoin as a payment option over environmental concerns, and, as of August 2021, it has taken in Dogecoin as currency for its cars and merchandise.
McDonald’s has turned the tables on Musk, jesting that it would accept the popular meme coin if Tesla agrees to use a fictional “Grimacecoin” too.

Following the exchange between Musk and McDonald’s, crypto traders have created their own versions of this so-called “GrimaceCoin.” CoinDesk reports there are now at least 10 of such currencies, and one of them even has a decent-looking website.
Among the new options is GRIM, which currently boasts over 1,000 holders and a diluted market cap of US$2.4 million.
McDonald’s has commented that it has no affiliation with any of the joke coins.
The fast-food chain itself has begun accepting cryptocurrency as a choice of payment. In El Salvador, the first country to recognize crypto as legal tender, customers can pay for Big Macs and more in Bitcoin.
