Soon, an area within the Finnish capital of Helsinki and surrounding it will receive heating from Microsoft computers.
In conjunction with state-owned energy firm Fortum, the tech giant will build data centers that aren’t just powered by 100% emission-free electricity but will also release residual heat generated from Microsoft’s computer-cooling system into nearby households and places of business.
Fortum, whose recycled heat system reaches 250,000 residents in Helsinki, says that Microsoft’s eco-friendly heat will account for 60% of the area’s heating.
Finland’s prime minister Sanna Marin has expressed support for the program. “The decision to invest in a data center that also provides surplus heat to our cities and homes is a win-win,” she shares in Fortum’s announcement. “It will accelerate Finland's digital growth while making our energy system greener. I also hope that this collaboration can serve as a model to other countries and cities looking means to achieve the double transformation of climate neutrality and digital competitiveness.”
