World’s First Energy-Positive Hotel To Open Off The Grid At Norwegian Glacier

As the world opens back up following the pandemic, travelers are itching to get on board planes and jet-set off to far-flung destinations once again. 

During this time, hoteliers all over the world have no doubt realized climate change has become a mainstream consideration, and are placing more emphasis on eco-friendly luxury accommodations, such as Hilton’s first net-zero hotel in the US, Audemars Piguet’s sustainable pod in the Alps, and a hotel room surrounded by birdhouses in Swedish Lapland.

Now, upping the ante, the Six Senses Svart, which is scheduled to open its doors in 2024, could be the world’s very first energy-positive hotel. 

Situated at the foot of the Svartisen glacier in Norway, the 94-room accommodation will be a sight to behold, as it suspends above the Holandsfjorden fjord using poles in an effort to minimize its impact on the surroundings. 

The property will make use of its own solar energy to power all of its needs, including the entire building, and even the boat used to shuttle guests. With its own waste and water management system and recycling infrastructure, this luxury tavern is set to become a self-sustaining marvel. 

Going a step further, the company said it will be tapping on solar energy for the construction of the hotel, making it a completely off-grid and carbon-neutral project, which it said demonstrated that “carbon neutrality can be not only feasible in a sophisticated development at an eco-sensitive site, but can also be profitable.” 

To make the stay even more memorable, guests will be treated to a whole host of wellness perks, including compression boots, vitamin IV drips in a “biohacking lounge,” and all-around fitness in sensory treatment suites. 

Intrigued? Be sure to visit the Alchemy Bar where regional healing techniques using local flora and fauna are used to pamper visitors, and the Earth Lab which will function as a sustainability outreach space. 

Plus, the Marketplace will be a special zero-waste dining venue where guests can be sure everything’s served fresh from the farm (or pickled!), with the hotel bottling its own drinking water to reduce plastic waste.
