We’ve all been waiting for Apple to roll out an Apple Watch with body temperature monitoring capabilities, and as per insider whispers, while that dream could still become reality in the near future, it’s hit some snags along the way.
Reputed tech analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who previously predicted the brand’s AirPods Pro 2 could come with lossless audio and that the iPhone 13 would have satellite technology, has recently revealed that, while Apple missed out on introducing the feature to Apple Watch Series 7 models due to a failed algorithm, it’s still possible it could be added to the upcoming releases.
According to MacRumors, it appears the technology giant faced issues with calibrating the algorithm responsible for producing accurate body temperature readings without the use of hardware to help, as skin temperature varies quickly based on the surrounding environment.
“Apple canceled body temperature measurement for Apple Watch 7 because the algorithm failed to quality before entering EVT (engineering validation testing) phase last year,” Kuo said in a tweet.
“I believe Apple Watch 8 in 2H22 could take body temperature if the algorithm can meet Apple’s high requirements before mass production.”
Interestingly, Kuo purported that Samsung has been facing similar problems with its measurement system, and that the Galaxy Watch 5 is unlikely to come with the feature due to the company struggling with the same problems Apple is undergoing.
Who will be the first to launch the long-awaited function with its latest smartwatches? Whichever firm does crack the code first, it’ll no doubt be a major step forward for wearables worldwide.
(2/3) The challenge in implementing precise body temperature measurement is that skin temperature quickly varies depending on outside environments. A smartwatch can't support core temperature measurement in terms of hardware, so it needs an excellent algorithm to work together.
