Mercedes-AMG Previews Its First All-Electric Sports Car In Striking Visuals
By Alexa Heah, 20 May 2022
Luxury automaker Mercedes-AMG has unveiled concept images of its first all-electric sports model, showcasing the vehicle’s sleek, stylish proportions akin to a “monolithic sculpture.”
With flowing surfaces, joints and shut lines kept to a minimum, and its side and rear windows painted in the same Alubeam silver as the body itself, the Vision AMG resembles a piece you’d see in an art gallery.
Those who’ve taken a shine to sportier vehicles will appreciate the electric vehicle’s design, especially from the side, where its long wheelbase, sharply raked A-pillar, short front overhang, and aerodynamic rear overhang is most prominent.
Calling the design “sensual,” the brand said the powerfully defined sculpture is representative of the “hallmark Mercedes design language,” and features the dual goals of the company’s design approach to embrace “Beauty & the Extraordinary.”
In terms of technology, the concept will have the entirety of its drivetrain components developed from scratch, including the AMG.EA platform, a dedicated high-performance high-voltage battery, and its “revolutionary” drive technology.
Of course, as with most AMG cars, the automaker is retaining the signature closed-off grille focal point, despite the fact that the all-electric vehicle doesn’t have a radiator located at the front.
Hence, the grille on the Vision AMG will be closed off, painted in the same color as the car’s body, and fully integrated into its front end, placing emphasis on the “futuristic look” of the vehicle with its illuminated bars and 3D contour.
Keen eyes will no doubt spot the similarities between the forthcoming car and the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team’s supercars, with the former incorporating the latter’s silver paintwork and large-format star pattern across its shoulders and rear fenders, exposed carbon-fiber elements, and several components painted in Petronas colors.
“AMG is reinventing itself. As was once the case with our founding fathers, there has been an amazing feeling of new beginnings here in Affalterbach for quite some time now. The course has been well and truly set for an electrified future, and we’ve set the bar high,” said Philipp Schiemer, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.
“With its contrasting modern surfacing and radical proportions, this car showcases the next design step, building on the VISION EQXX and moving further towards performance luxury. The seamless flow of beautifully formed surfaces and the monolithic sculpture complete the powerful aesthetic of the Vision AMG,” added Garden Wagener, Chief Design Officer of Mercedes-Benz Group AG.
“The result is an electric supercar, a style icon that stimulates desire—and that’s exactly what sets a luxury sports car apart.”
