Kanye West Reimagines McDonald’s Packaging With Help Of MUJI Designer
By Alexa Heah, 24 May 2022
If there’s one celebrity who is constantly at the forefront of design and fashion, it’s Kanye West. The mogul has teamed up with industry giants including Gap and Adidas, though there’s never been a lack of controversy surrounding his work. In the past, YEEZY has been sued for failing to deliver products on time, while Gap was reportedly peeved at how long the rapper was taking to design his line. Elsewhere, he’s been accused of ripping off a small business’ logo for tour merchandise.
Now, in a brand-new conceptual project, West is dipping his toes into packaging design; more specifically, he is taking on the challenge of reimagining the ubiquitous look of McDonald’s food packaging.
According to Hypebeast, the artist has teamed up with MUJI industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa for the venture, and recently posted a sneak peek of one of the reworked designs on his Instagram account.
“Ye teams up with the legendary MUJI industrial designer Naoto Fukasawa to reimagine McDonald’s packaging,” the caption read.
The image featured a design of the fast-food chain’s iconic burger box, though instead of the distinct red and yellow fans are used to, the Golden Arches are laid atop the ingredients you’ll expect to find in your burger.
Underneath, the words “next week it’s the fries” appear, a reference to lyrics West wrote for one of his most famous songs, Gold Digger.
As per Rap-Up, West’s effort to rework McDonald’s packaging shouldn’t come as a surprise, with the singer once tweeting that the fast-service restaurant was his favorite. Earlier this year, he had also made an appearance in the chain’s Super Bowl commercial as a surprise.
Will we see an official collaboration between McDonald’s and West anytime soon?
