In a bizarre act that had as many layers as the cake involved in it, a man attempted to deface Leonardo da Vinci’s 500-year-old Mona Lisa painting at the Louvre by disguising himself as an old lady, before inching in and smearing cake over the display.
Moments before visitors realized something was up, the culprit, sat in a wheelchair, got up and removed his wig. He then plunged forward and “caked” the poor La Gioconda, according to eyewitnesses at the scene.
Visuals shared by Twitter user @lukeXC2002 on Sunday document the commotion that took place afterwards.
Maybe this is just nuts to meðbut an man dressed as an old lady jumps out of a wheel chair and attempted to smash the bullet proof glass of the Mona Lisa. Then proceeds to smear cake on the glass, and throws roses everywhere all before being tackled by security. ð??? pic.twitter.com/OFXdx9eWcM

Security personnel rushed in to escort the man out of the gallery. As he walked out, the rogue visitor was heard declaring that he had pulled the stunt all for the name of raising awareness for the environment.
Thankfully, the Mona Lisa came out of the incident unscathed. For reasons made even clearer after the attempted vandalism, the world’s most famous painting is protected by bulletproof glass, which was the only part of the exhibit that was affected.
