The past few years have been pretty dark, what with a pandemic, physical separations, and political division.
While it looks like it’ll be a long way before life returns to normal, a sort of glimmer ignites humanity in this darkness. It comes as a spark, a feeling: It’s love.
British industrial designer Mark Mitchell captures the feeling of love in an adorable ‘Hug Lamp’. The display is shaped like a pair of figures leaning in for an embrace, their soft, vegan-friendly fur exteriors reenacting the cozy feeling of a hug.

“One day someone walks into your life and everything changes. Your heart skips a beat. A magical glow alights from within. Every touch feels electric. There’s a sense that, however tumultuous life gets, you will be safe together,” Mitchell explains in an email to DesignTAXI.
The designer says the lamp resonates with him as travel restrictions have kept him and his girlfriend and friends apart for more than 16 months. “If you are lucky enough to be with your loved ones, treasure these moments you can share together,” he adds.

The lighting setup is touch-activated, creating a “warm happy glow” when the two halves wrap their arms around each other. It also arrives with a dimmer and a switch for added convenience.

“Hug Lamp is a reminder to hold those close to us, or to have hope for the future,” Mitchell elaborates. The lamp is available on Articture.
