Royal Mail Honors 50 Years Of Pride With Stamps Walking Through The Ages
By Nicole Rodrigues, 27 Jun 2022
The UK’s largest Pride parade has hit its golden anniversary, and to mark the occasion, specially-made stamps depicting the LGBTQ+ community at Pride walks have been created.
Under the theme A March Through Time, the artworks begin with portrayals from 1972, when the Pride celebrations first kicked off in Trafalgar Square, before taking you through the decades of LGBTQ+ activism and support.
NB, a London-based branding studio, was the creative mind behind the stamps, which were illustrated by English queer artist Sofie Birkin.
The stamps are a colorful medley of people from numerous sexualities and identities, and include banners representative of era, like “Love Always Wins.” We also get to see the Pride flag evolve over the stages.
As an accompaniment to the stamps, an animation studio called, Animade, created a video for the stamps. The video brings the artwork to life and tells how Pride has changed over the years.
The bright and vibrant colors harmonize well with the Pride flag and radiate positivity and, unsurprisingly, pride in the community.
NB was approached with the project at the beginning of 2021 and had been worked on it since, making sure to not only narrate these stories well but also have everyone’s identities included and respected.
With Royal Mail’s far and widespread reach, the team continuously worked on the designs over and over again to make sure they were worthy of the community.
NB was tasked with creating eight landscape stamps—which when put together, line up like a tapestry painting. They include a filler card, three handstamps, an envelope, a coin cover, a presentation pack, and a first-day cover.
