How Green Became The Color To Light Up Abortion Rights Rallies

Green is the color of Mother Nature, as well as women seeking freedom everywhere.

Argentina was where it began, as the movement known as the ‘green tide’ or ‘green wave’ spread through Latin America. Marta Alanis, the founder of Catholics for the Right to Decide, had proposed in 2003 the notion of wearing green to celebrate “hope, health, and life,” quotes Le Monde.

Since then, the color has been the choice at abortion rallies in the form of scarves, flags, shirts, and posters to symbolize the desire for choice.

And on December 30, 2020, abortion was finally legalized in Argentina after years of strife and grief.  

The hue has since been adopted by campaigns everywhere to unify their messages with one another. More specifically, it was a demonstration with the motive of “A Global Call For Legal Abortion” held on September 28, 2017, where the green scarf was first spotted and rang through the hearts and minds of many watching, taking the symbol global.

Rallies for access to abortion are now bathed in a sea of green as the color resonates with the freedom of sex healthcare and a life that is not governed by the choices of other people.  

A single color to tie all supporters together made an impact on the movement, especially recently when the Roe v. Wade ruling had been overturned. Now more than ever has green been needed to unite all women and supporters together as their fight for freedom continues.
