Google Refreshes Gmail To Blend With Its ‘Material You’ Design Language

Eagle-eyed users of Gmail on the web may have noticed that their inboxes are looking a tad cleaner. On Tuesday, Google announced that the desktop version of its email client has phased into a ‘Material You’ design.

For the uninitiated, Material You is Google’s latest design language and builds upon the long-standing Material Design, which the company previously said had gotten stale. The revamped visual system, first introduced in Android 12 to bring myriad customization options to smartphone users, envisions a more dynamic and organic overall appearance.

Frankly, Gmail’s desktop facelift is pretty subtle. Google appears to have swapped out the old light gray for faint blues, as well as made the text on the left menu more pronounced.

Unread emails are highlighted in bold, while read emails fade out in lighter text and a blue background.

The pill-shaped ‘Compose’ button with a drop shadow has also now been molded into a flat, rectangular blue box with rounded edges.

Organizational buffs will particularly appreciate that the light redesign includes a ‘Gmail-only’ view as an option to the integrated layout of Chat, Spaces, and Meet controls introduced this year.

Rollouts have begun, so you should be seeing the new design soon if you haven’t already.
