At the recent Glastonbury Festival, closing act Kendrick Lamar wowed the crowd when he performed with a modern-day ‘Crown Of Thorns’, a diamond-encrusted one, to be more precise.
It turns out that the lavish design was conceptualized by none other than Tiffany & Co, and was commissioned by the rapper and his collaborator Dave Fee, who worked directly with the House’s designers and craftsmen on the masterpiece.
Amazingly, the famed jeweler said the crown, which was inspired by Jean Schlumberger’s brooch, comprised of 50 thorns of “varying shapes and over 8,000 diamonds”—worth over 137 carats—arranged in a cobblestone pattern to maximize its sparkle.
On the side of the crown are the words “Mr Morale,” engraved in reference to Lamar’s latest album, Mr Morale and the Big Steppers.
The Crown of Thorns took over 10 months to be handcrafted by four artisans, who spent a total of 1,300 hours carefully setting each diamond by hand, and eventually assembling the 16 separate pieces into the final design that took to the stage.
