Apple Extends DIY Repair Kits To MacBooks So You Can Fix Your Laptop At Home
By Nicole Rodrigues, 23 Aug 2022
Owners of M1 Macbook Pros and Macbook Airs will now be able to fix their own devices as Apple has made its self-repair kits available to those laptops.
The repair service will start on August 23 in the United States, before branching out to Europe and other parts of the world later this year.
The program will allow customers to purchase repair parts and manuals directly from Apple and perform their own servicing on their own 2020 M1 MacBook Air and Pro, along with 2021 MacBook Pros fitted with M1 or M1 Max chips.
According to Apple, the display, top case with battery, trackpad, and over a dozen different repair pieces for the different models will be available.
You can rent a repair kit for US$49 for a week at a time. While prices vary, it will be less expensive if you trade in the same part.
Before applying for a set, you will need to head onto Apple’s Self Service Repair site to check through the manual pertaining to your damaged device. After that, you will need to visit the Apple Self Service Repair Store to place an order for the kit.
Apple’s plan to add its MacBooks to its self-repair services coincides with a US$50 million class action lawsuit over the company’s problematic ‘butterfly’ keyboards.
