Mark Zuckerberg has been in his element in the metaverse. Not only has he initiated the public into the virtual realm by way of Meta, but he also has a 3D home office (concept). In his avatar’s free time, he also appears to enjoy taking selfies in front of replicas of world landmarks.
Zuckerberg recently took a digital “selfie” in front of the Eiffel Tower and the Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família to announce the expansion of his virtual-reality platform Horizon Worlds in France and Spain. With its vacant eyes and Wii-like aesthetic, however, the metaverse double was widely mocked, prompting Meta to improve on its graphics.
No matter your thoughts about the Meta CEO, you’ve likely also wondered what it’s like to step in his shoes. While an experience like that remains far beyond the, erm, horizon, you could at least walk around with his face—Metaverse Zuckerberg’s face, that is—for now.
Both inspired and haunted by Zuckerberg’s expressionless metaverse face, Nashville-based creative technologist Matt Reed has created an augmented-reality mask filter that lets you deepfake yourself with the cursed selfie.
The filter, usable on Snapchat, is called the ‘HoriZuck Lens’ for a couple of reasons. It’s a nod to Meta’s Horizon Worlds platform and, presumably, an allusion to horror films.
Reed tells Futurism that Halloween masks were at the top of his mind after having watched a YouTube video about classic movies. It was around this time when “MetaMark” greeted the world with his vacant virtual smile.
The creator likens the final result to “Leatherface from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.” As terrifying as the AR lens is, it still made him laugh, and he hopes it can make and break others’ day too.
