Filmmaker Announces Sci-Fi Movie Entirely Produced From DALL-E & Other AI

The world of movie-making is welcoming new pros: artificially-intelligent set designers. A novice filmmaker is demonstrating the prowess of AI by relying solely on generative art models to create an entire film.

Fabian Stelzer, a German tech entrepreneur, is producing a 70s-style sci-fi flick titled Salt. He will be using AI models to develop everything from the scenery, visual effects, landscapes, and even the voices.

Programs such as DALL-E 2, Midjourney, Murph, and Stable Diffusion are used to bring Stelzer’s vision to life. Stelzer will input minute-long descriptions of what he wants, which include what the scene would look like, what the characters are doing, the audio, and even the camera filter grain.

The film sees two cosmic travelers that have landed on a far-off planet and find themselves surrounded by a vast land of this peculiar salt-like substance—hence the name of the movie. Instead of taking the traditional route of storyboarding and writing the script, Stelzer is inviting the community in on the project as he uses his Twitter account to allow viewers to help make major decisions for the feature’s plot.

SALT is a fully AI-generated filmverse, where community choices drive a multi-plot story.

According to PCMag, Stelzer is looking at creating a network of different types of episodes to make up the film that would each cater to different audiences.

As of right now, AI models cannot produce moving scenes, and as such, the AI movie will be a series of still shots stitched together, like a stop-motion film. However, Stelzer is using a deepfake system and video editing to create fluidity and motion in Salt.

Stelzer has stated, via the same report, that the introduction of AI art marks a new era in innovation that was as impactful as the invention of photography. He hopes that by creating Salt, it will inspire more people to make their own movies and make the film industry more accessible to everyone.
