Electric Bowls & Spoons Add ‘Salt’ To Your Food Without Actually Doing So

Having a high salt intake diet is harmful to our well-being. It can cause an onslaught of health problems such as high blood pressure, stroke, and heart disease. But there’s no denying that cutting out entirely from our food is extremely hard.
Here to save our health—and taste buds—is Kirin’s electric bowl and spoon set, which claims to pepper in the same flavor by, well, stimulation.
Wavelengths of electricity are sent from the surface of the bowl and spoon to come in contact with the food. When it does, it triggers specific ions. These particles are subsequently bunched together, and when hitting our tongue, deliver a “pseudo-sensory perception.”
Metal strips are placed on the tip of the spoon, and on the edge of the bowl, where users are advised to eat from in order to taste the intended effect. There are four levels of intensity, and the gadgets can supposedly make food taste saltier “by approximately 1.5 times.”
According to the food tech company, the electric current is “very weak” and “does not affect the human body.”
Previously, a pair of electric chopsticks were released to do the same job. However, due to the utensils’ form factor, they couldn’t hold a significant enough power source to replicate the taste of salt effectively.
So instead, a separate attachment had to be worn on the wrist to power the tools up. In this case, however, the bowl and spoon work together and have ample room for their circuit and battery.
Can’t wait to savor the taste of innovation? Kirin notes that the utensils are close to hitting the market and should be available by next year.
