Bombay Sapphire Stirs Up An Artistic Spirit With Its Basquiat-Wrapped Bottle
By Nicole Rodrigues, 28 Oct 2022
Take a sip out of contemporary art with Bombay Sapphire’s new Jean-Michel Basquiat-printed bottle.
The collaboration sees early work done by Basquiat wrapped around the bottle with its famous logo stamped onto it. The work chosen is a relatively unknown piece titled Untitled (LA Painting) that had only been seen once by the general public at his second showing.
The image is a tranquil look at Venice Beach in Los Angeles, a getaway spot for the New York native. It features pivotal icons from his work, including the bird, the crown, and the skull, which have been overlayed onto a cyan background to represent the ocean.
According to Forbes, the company cites a “unique printing mechanism” to directly etch the artwork onto the product. This allowed Basquiat’s distinct brushwork and vibrant colors to come through.
The final product is a bright turquoise bottle with loud yellow paint and black drawings popping out in eye-catching detail.
This project marks the third art-inspired vessel after Hebru Brantley in 2020 and Steven Harrington in 2021. However, this is the first time a piece has been printed straight onto the bottle.
In April this year, Bombay Sapphire began to establish a connection between itself and the Basquiat estate by sponsoring his family’s King Pleasure exhibition in New York. The showing featured three unknown creations from the artist. The brand also released an official cocktail, “King Meets Queen,” in honor of the retrospective.
If you’re looking to add a stroke of art to your liquor collection, the bottle is going for US$34 via the official website.
