Polaroid SX-70 Gets A 24K Solid Gold Edition For Camera’s 50th Anniversary
By Nicole Rodrigues, 07 Nov 2022
The Polaroid SX-70 is about to celebrate its golden anniversary this year, so there seems no better way to mark the special occasion than with a fully-functional, solid gold rendition of itself.
The limited-edition model comes out of Retrospekt, a company in Milwaukee that specializes in restoring vintage Polaroids. With that, the celebratory camera is partially constructed from old parts from the original version, which has been stripped, reconstituted in 24K gold, and serialized for authenticity.
The SX-70 rose to fame after being released in 1972, as it relieved the photography world of having to depend on developing film and brought about an era of instant images.
This isn’t the first time a golden Polaroid has been made. According to Digital Camera World, the company has created special gold cameras for outstanding employees.
Retrospekt has only released 50 of these Polaroids for a price of $999. As of the time of publication, however, it appears that the cameras have been sold out.
