On November 9, when the Elon Musk-dominated Twitter first rolled out its new verification scheme, it was met with trolls and impersonators who used the blue check to turn their accounts into pseudo versions of companies and personalities to wreak havoc on the platform.
In response, the social media platform’s new CEO strives to correct the error by releasing a new multicolored scheme.
As explained by the new Chief Twit in a tweet, it seems companies will soon employ a gold mark, government officials will use a gray check, and individual personalities will have a blue logo. This means that celebrities and people who have purchased the new US$8 monthly plan will be assigned the same color.
Sorry for the delay, we’re tentatively launching Verified on Friday next week.
Gold check for companies, grey check for government, blue for individuals (celebrity or not) and all verified accounts will be manually authenticated before check activates.
Individuals under different organizations will also be allowed to have a secondary verification mark to link them back to their workplace. With the additional badges, companies would also corroborate that those individuals work for them.
All verified individual humans will have same blue check, as boundary of what constitutes “notable” is otherwise too subjective.
Individuals can have secondary tiny logo showing they belong to an org if verified as such by that org.
Twitter Blue is being paused until November 29, when it is set to resume. However, it is not known if the new scheme will launch at the same time. TechCrunch posits that existing verified accounts will use the new authentication method, but it is unlikely to roll out for paid subscribers for now.
