IKEA & Sonos Announce Chic Floor Lamp That Doubles As Space-Saving Speaker
By Mikelle Leow, 09 Dec 2022
Wish your furniture could sing you a lullaby? Since 2019, IKEA and Sonos have been unleashing speakers that blend into space-starved homes, with multipurpose audio products that fit into bookshelves or light up your room.
The pair have now given their SYMFONISK Lamp a literal up-grade by transforming it into a standing lighting piece. IKEA imagines the addition would fit beautifully in corners too small to accommodate another table for a lamp or speaker.
The standing light-up speaker has three slim metal legs that join at a support below. Meanwhile, the perforations in its bamboo shade allow light to peek gently into the room.
Boom, boom, boom, boom, I want you in my room.
While the lamp arrives with a bamboo top, the shade can be personalized with others from the SYMFONISK line.
As with all speakers, the device has play/pause controls and volume buttons.
Stjepan Begic, Range Design Leader at IKEA of Sweden, explains that IKEA and Sonos were inspired to create a tall lamp speaker after learning that homeowners are often on the lookout for “several light sources on different levels and parts of the room to create the right mood.”
“The challenge of not having enough room for a table to put the lamp on led us to create the floor lamp,” Begic elaborates in a news release.
Although IKEA says the SYMFONISK standing lamp is thoughtfully designed “with simplicity in mind,” MobileSyrup points out that the cable doesn’t elegantly extend from the lamp’s base. Instead, the wire hangs out from the speaker, joining the lamp’s stem as an unsightly fourth leg.
With that being said, it shouldn’t look too jarring if the cable neatly leans along the leg line.
The furniture giant notes that the lamp can be paired with other SYMFONISK or Sonos speakers to create a home theater system enlivened with light and sound. Like other products in its range, the lamp can be connected to the IKEA Home app to be controlled from your smartphone.
The standing light speaker is slated to arrive in January 2023. IKEA has yet to disclose pricing details, so stay tuned—and illuminated.
