LEGO Unveils Hokusai ‘Great Wave’ Set To Move You Into The Flow
By Mikelle Leow, 29 Dec 2022
Few artworks have made a cultural splash as formidable as Katsushika Hokusai’s The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Ever since its creation in the 1830s, the woodblock print has surfed across museums and merchandise around the world. Riding the wave now is LEGO, which has given a new dimension to the beloved painting.
The latest set to the LEGO Art series for grownups, ‘The Great Wave’ model envisages the classical work in 3D and wraps it up in a charming brick-made frame, with a little ‘water’ splashing out of the canvas.
The 1,810-piece mosaic captures the masterpiece’s large wave, small boats, and Mount Fuji backdrop with 1 x 1-tiles and layered plates that give it great depth and texture.
It’s designed as an outlet for relaxation, inviting you to decompress as you gradually turn your artwork into 3D.
“We’re thrilled that fans of art and Japanese culture will get the chance to immerse themselves into the relaxing project of recreating the iconic Great Wave,” explains Annemette Nielsen, Designer at the LEGO Group. “This set offers so many ways that fans can unwind and find their flow. Not just immersing themselves into the building process, but also getting into the artwork and how that is composed.”
Art enthusiasts can further ease into the flow with an accompanying soundtrack created just for the Great Wave build. They can then discover more about the original woodblock print in the instruction booklet, which delves into its history.
The Hokusai – The Great Wave set will float to LEGO locations and its online store from January 1, 2023, retailing for US$99.99.
