‘Lord Of The Rings’ Creator Tolkien Honored On UK Commemorative Coins
By Alexa Heah, 30 Dec 2022
Apart from King Charles III, someone else highly-esteemed in British culture will soon be honored by the Royal Mint.
The Lord Of The Rings author JRR Tolkien will feature in the upcoming 2023 commemorative set, alongside a special five-pound note for the King’s 75th birthday.
Tolkien’s iconic monogram, which will appear encircled by a runic pattern created by artist David Lawrence, will “forever grace” the two-pound coin.
And if you look closely, “not all those who wander are lost,” a quote from one of the author’s poems, will be inscribed on the coin’s edge.
King Charles’ effigy will remain on the head of the coin, with Tolkien's monogram at the back.
“JRR Tolkien’s monogram is an elegant creation: a mysterious symbol redolent of alchemical signs and magical scripts… I quickly saw that this had to be central to the design,” explained Lawrence.
